Did you let the recent Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve® promotions sail off? Here are the cards’ current welcome offers.

60,000 Bonus Points for the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve®

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve® both offer 60,000 bonus Chase Ultimate Rewards® points after you spend $4,000 on eligible purchases within three (3) months of being approved for card membership.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card‘s biggest-ever bonus was 100,000 a few years ago (and also when it launched, I believe). If I remember correctly, the Chase Sapphire Reserve® topped out at 80,000 points for its most generous offer. We don’t know if those promotions will ever return. So, if either of these cards has been on your radar, now might be a good time to take advantage of the welcome offers.

We are big fans of the Chase Ultimate Rewards program and its cards.

Welcome Offer Eligibility and 5/24

Before we jump into the cards’ specifics, let’s address a couple of questions some people may have.

Who’s Eligible for the Cards?

Here’s the language, per Chase:

“The product is not available to either (i) current cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card, or (ii) previous cardmembers of any Sapphire credit card who received a new cardmember bonus within the last 48 months. (Bold mine.) If you are an existing Sapphire customer and would like this product, please call the number on the back of your card to see if you are eligible for a product change. You will not receive the new cardmember bonus if you change products.”

What About 5/24?

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve® are subject to 5/24.

“5/24” is the colloquial term for Chase’s practice of automatically declining any applicant who’s been approved for five or more personal/consumer cards from any issuer within the past 24 months. (Business credit card approvals do not count 5/24, though Chase does take people’s 5/24 activity into consideration during the application process.)

We hear Chase might be relaxing a little bit when it comes to 5/24. That’s (anecdotally) been the case with their business cards. If you’re over 5/24 but apply for a Chase personal card, please let us know what happens.

Main Benefits of Both Cards

Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card and Chase Sapphire Reserve® members can apply points at increased values when purchasing travel through Chase Travel℠.

  • Chase Sapphire Reserve® can apply points at a value of 1.5 cents each (as opposed to the standard 1 cent each). For example, 75,000 points is potentially worth up to $1,125 in travel purchases through Chase.
  • Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card can apply points at a value of 1.25 cents each. For example, 75,000 points is potentially worth over $925 in travel purchases through Chase.

Keep in mind you link other Chase cards to your Sapphire Preferred or Sapphire Reserve accounts — and transfer over those points. For example, if you have a Ink Business Cash® Credit Card, you can send those points over to your Reserve card — and then apply them at 1.5 cents each through Chase Travel℠. It really gives the Ultimate Rewards program a bunch of value.

You can also transfer points to Chase’s loyalty program partners:

Both also feature excellent trip interruption, trip cancellation, and travel delay coverage when using your card to pay at least a portion of your eligible trip.

What about the individual cards?

The Sapphire Preferred is great for everyday purchases such as dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases (because, really, it’s more fun to let others do the shopping, right? 🙂 )

It also carries a $95 annual fee vs. the Reserve’s $550. But the Reserve comes with up to $300 in annual statement credits for eligible travel purchases — and a lot of purchases count toward it (I’ve had parking meters earn back the credit!).

The Reserve is geared more toward people who enjoy travel benefits. It comes with Priority Pass Select membership for airport lounges (enrollment required) and access to Chase’s growing network of their signature Chase Sapphire Lounges by The Club.

I also love the Reserve’s monthly Instacart credits.
