Do you love wearing a necktie with a dress shirt buttoned up tight? How about pantyhose and painful high heels? Yeah, we much prefer a more comfortable wardrobe and especially when we’re on a wonderful and relaxing cruise vacation. Here are some of our go-to ideas for what to wear onboard.

Security

This might sound odd to lead off with, but when you are in port and want to explore it becomes very important. Let’s face it, the world is not becoming a safer place everywhere and some areas require forethought for your own protection. Having comfortable shorts with secure pockets, even hidden ones, are a huge help in making sure you can carry what you need with you while keeping it safe from pickpockets.

No Camo

As we covered in our post on what not to wear, camouflage patterns are a strict no-no in some areas. Also to be avoided are shirts with profanity or suggestive images. Some places you might wish to visit in various ports will require proper footwear or even head and shoulders covered.

Beach Casual

While dinner dining typically frowns upon shorts, there are a lot of other options that are perfectly acceptable substitutes for jacket and tie or more formal wear. Even on my first ever Holland America cruise when I wore a Hawaiian shirt with jeans on formal night it was not at all a problem. For easy packing my wife finds that “crinkle” skirts and non-cotton sundresses are great.

Footwear

For walking around in the port cities you will want some comfortable walking sandals. Depending on the excursions you have booked, you may want even more sturdy hiking shoes or for a day at the beach, beach shoes are always great to have.

Miscellaneous

A hat or sun visor is great for protecting your face on those long days in the sun. A variety of swimwear makes it fun and nice when your suit from yesterday is still hanging in the shower drying. Sunglasses are a must as well. A wind breaker can be useful as some ports tend to be always on the windy side.

Final Thoughts

Plan your packing to have a great time. If you can utilize the ship’s laundry services you can get away with bringing even less. People tend to over-pack and bring many things they never wear and didn’t need. Hopefully these tips will help you make smart selections for a stress-free and enjoyable cruise vacation! – René
