The American Express® Green Card is a good compliment to some of American Express® Membership Rewards® luxury cards that don’t quite impress in the points-earning arena.

All information about the American Express® Green Card has been gathered independently by Frequent Floaters. It has not been reviewed by the card issuer.

  • 3X on travel
    • including airfare, hotels, cruises, tours, car rentals, campgrounds, travel purchases on third-party travel websites, and travel purchases on amextravel.com.
  • 3X on transit
    • including trains, taxicabs, rideshare services, ferries, tolls, parking, buses, and subways
  • 3X at restaurants worldwide
  • 1X on other eligible purchases

It’s really the only Membership Rewards card that broadly rewards general travel and dining spending. (I don’t have this card for one reason and one reason only: I already hold six Amex cards! I’ve caught my limit and can’t get approved for any more unless I start canceling some of them. Otherwise, I’d be all over this.)

How does the American Express® Green Card‘s earning structure compare to a couple of other consumer/personal Amex heavyweights?

The American Express® Gold Card awards 4X at restaurants worldwide and 3X for flights booked directly with airlines or on amextravel.com. However, it doesn’t give you anything higher than 1X for cruises, hotel stays, rideshare, parking, etc. (But it’s still a good card loaded with features.)

The Platinum Card® from American Express packs a nice punch with its two 5X categories: flights booked directly with airlines or through American Express Travel (on up to $500,000 per calendar year) and on eligible prepaid hotels booked at amextravel.com, including The Hotel Collection. Once again, everything else earns 1X — but that card is also loaded with luxury travel features (airport lounge access opportunities, etc.), statement credit opportunities, and much more.

The card’s annual fee is $150. And it’s simple to earn that back.

  • American Express® Green Card members can earn up to $189 each year in CLEAR statement credit. If you travel frequently through major airports with CLEAR kiosks, that alone covers the annual_fees annual fee. (Enrollment required. card_name.)
  • Plus, you can take advantage of certain airport club lounges with an annual $100 LoungeBuddy credit (Enrollment required. card_name.).

So, if you love Membership Rewards points, travel, and dining, this card is definitely one you should check out. Check out this special referral offer now!
